A Note On Haruto
Aug. 20th, 2013 08:30 pm As will be noted from his profile, Haruto does in fact exist in Kaito's AU--and really, how could he not? It's not Kaito without Haruto.
In fact, just about all of Zexal remains intact, with noted changes and differences caused by Kaito's absence after a certain point. As it is, not only had Chris left Heartland by the time Kaito was pulled into the 'Heartland Enrichment Center for Sciences', but given his outfit during his escape attempt with Haruto, it can be assumed he was even at least somewhat familiar with Photon Mode.
However, when Kaito broke Haruto out, he deliberately picked a moment which would cause the most chaos, thus creating enough ruckus to buy him and his brother time to escape. Worse, at that time, Haruto's treatment recovery was within 'Aperture' itself--it was moved to Heartland Tower almost immediately after the incident (which was rather fortunate, as Heartland Tower was of course separate from the Aperture building, and thus unaffected by GlaDOS' rampage.). Given what a ruckus in Aperture is likely to result in however, the damage was done--in fact, while not at all intentional, Kaito's actions would postpone the activation of 'GlaDOS 3.10' due to damages, to the extent that the date would be pushed back by a number of weeks.
Because of this, it was decided after their recapture that Kaito was too much of a threat to leave standing. Regardless of any promises or agreements he made to do as they said, he could not be trusted, or so Heartland felt. Faker and Haruto were fed the lie that Kaito had been killed in a misfire during the recapture, surviving long enough to reach the nearest medical facility (which was, conveniently enough, Aperture), but succumbing to his wounds nonetheless. After being 'silenced', he would be put through the testing for 'Memory Erasure'...
And this is where things get relevant. Kaito isn't aware of how much time has passed while he was in stasis, nor is he able to recall a bit about Heartland's inner workings concerning duel monsters. To say it's unsettling is putting it lightly--while he definitely feels most calm imagining his closest relative to be a brother, he will in fact not recognize Haruto as such, despite the obvious emotional bond he experiences. And it's very likely he'll never remember! But despite this, his attachment remains--the intense desire to find and protect him remains, to the point where it is his very driving force behind his constant attempts to escape Aperture's laboratories.
He does however, have a few memories of note. He can remember scenes of the cottage he and Haruto used to live in, and even remembers the sound of his laugh. He remembers the colour of Haruto's hair, and he remembers 'gold eyes' (though that particular memory is partially tainted by GlaDOS, who of course has a gold-yellow eye.). Going further back in terms of recollection, he occasionally whistles the same tune he does in canon, and quite enjoys the melody. Further still, and he feels familiar with not only Haruto (who again, triggers the familial response despite him not actually recalling why), but also with Heartland Tower, and Chris--the latter of whom is, while not remembered clearly at all, a sort of audio trigger. He feels better hearing his or Haruto's voice--that's just how it works. In the same way that he recognizes Heartland Tower, he also recognizes Droite and Gauche, though the response is more confusion than clear familiarity.
So. Long story short, he doesn't remember who Haruto is, but despite that is not only able to recall the sound of his laugh, his eyes, and the cottage they shared, but will in fact respond to him quite instinctively as a brother would. Moreover, since it is in fact finding Haruto that propels his near obsessive drive to escape Aperture, he'll be a lot less agitated around him (or any version of him really)!
